Ten possible reasons why Solange got dropped from her label.

solange shaved head2

Not that it should come as a surprise, artists get dropped from labels like flies. But there are so many reasons why an artist gets dropped, you know, poor record sales, disagreement with the label, the artist wants to be released from the contract and so on and so forth.

But I want to focus more on Solange and why she could have possibly got dropped, mainly because I feel like she has done this to herself. Please note that in no way am I an expert, nor do I have any knowledge of the music industry. I’m just giving opinion of some facts. So, in no particular order, here we go:

1. Too much random and unusual tweets on Twitter. First of all, when did Twitter become a press release for celebrities? What ever happened to a press release or a statement issued by their publicist? I know we can say “Twitter is the devil” until we are blue in the face, but when Solange starts ranting about why she chopped her hair off, not only does that make her lose followers, but it just sounds like a desperate cry for attention.

2. She chopped her hair off. Let’s face it. Had she not chopped her hair off, would she still have a record deal? I know, I know, we are “not our hair”, but image is important, sad to say. We can’t chop our hair off whenever we feel like it and expect the executives at a label to be OK with it. Remember when Aubrey dyed her hair in that episode of “Making the Band”? Diddy did not approve at all. Remember when Whitney Houston first came to Arista Records with short hair? Next thing you know, they slapped a wig on her and we haven’t seen her real hair since.

3. She had a song called “F–k the Industry“. Self explanatory, I know, but although it was unreleased, come on! It’s one thing to be subliminal like Q-Tip (you know the line, “Industry Rule #4,080……”), but it’s another thing to just flat out say it. It sounded like she was already setting herself up for failure.

4. The Fox News incident. Need we say more?

5. She is not Beyonce, never was, never will be. Harsh as it may seem, it’s the truth. And as hard as she tried to distance herself from her sister, it just came off as crazy. I will give it to her, her wardrobe and her shoes were/are fierce, but why the constant need to explain herself over and over again that she is not her sister?

6. Having a kid and getting married at a young age. Before you come down on me, let me explain. Remember when Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn got pregnant? There was so much press about that. Before that, she had her own show on Nickelodeon and there was speculation that she might get dropped from the show. But guess what? She got support from her fans and to keep her show. Now Solange? I don’t think the media was as forgiving and/or accepting to her getting married and pregnant before 21. But they were so forgiving to Jamie Lynn though. Double standard?

7. She wasn’t on Beyonce’s record label. Had she been on Beyonce’s label, would she be going through what she’s going through now and going the independent route? Hmmm….just saying. And while we’re at it…..

8. Matthew Knowles probably didn’t get her the best record deal. Where was he during all of this? I don’t feel like he had her back at all whatsoever.

9. Her music is not memorable. Can you name a song of hers that when it comes on, you recognize it and say that it’s Solange?

10. Her sales weren’t up to par. In this day and age where bloggers are posting up new music for the readers to listen to and download, no one is really buying CDs. Even if we are buying CDs , can you honestly say that you have all of her songs on your Ipod?

Bonus: It’s hard to outsell Beyonce when Beyonce is overshadowing everyone. Poor Kelly, Michelle and Letoya. And anyone else who actually has decent material but has to settle for being in Beyonce’s shadow. Poor little “tink-tinks”.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, perhaps if Solange were to humble herself and try to stand out from her sister in a quiet manner, maybe she could outsell her sister one day. I did say one day.

I like the list, but the hair incident wasn’t all that big of a deal. Remember that India Arie cut her hair right after “Voyage to India” came out & MoTown didn’t think once about dropping her. Mind you India had some long dreads then. I just think Solange was doomed b/c her sister was Beyonce. If she had no well known relatives she could’ve had a decent career. Also I loved her debut album in 2002
