I don’t quite know what to make of this announcement that Tyra Banks made about going “au natural”, wearing no weaves and lace fronts and declaring September 8th “National Real Hair Day”:

“This season on The Tyra Show we’re taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they’ve got and be proud!” the Emmy-winning former supermodel says. “For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that – no fake hair, I’m rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on Sept. 8, which we’re declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!” (source)

I guess it’s OK. We should all rock our hair in it’s natural state, after all, we are “not our hair”, like India Arie said.

However, I don’t know if it’s to boost ratings or not (or perhaps self esteem, after all, Tyra is about self esteem), but at this point I have seen Tyra without makeup, Tyra without a bra (when she wanted to let everyone know that her breasts were not fake), Tyra in a bathing suit when she told everyone to kiss her “fat azz” (when everyone made fun of her weight), and so on and so forth. What more does she have to prove? We know that celebrities don’t wake up looking glamourous and that she is a regular person like the rest of us. As long as we don’t see her getting her “business” waxed or her scratching her azz on live TV, then we get it.  She’s “real”.

You know what I am waiting on? Beyonce without her lace front! How about Naomi Campbell (I know it’s a stretch, being that there is speculation that she has a receding hairline)? I know that will never happen, but can’t we all just dream of that day?

I just feel like Tyra revealing her natural hair is a bit latedotnet, especially since Erykah Badu and Solange (and possibly a few others) have been going without wigs as of late. Again, nothing wrong with what she is doing and I am sure she is making a statement, but I am beginning to wonder if she is running out of topics.
