Aretha wants royalties for her inauguration hat (really now?)

I didn’t see what the big deal was with Aretha’s hat and I still don’t get it now. Call me being out of touch with what is in, but Aretha did make a statement, good and bad. I wish Norman Blackwell was still alive to see this, because I’ll bet he would have said that this was the worst dressed.
I guess I’m not a fashionista because I was in no rush to order the hat and if I had it I wouldn’t know what to wear with it. Booze is my thing, hats are not.
Aretha will always be the “Queen of Soul” and a diva. Divas want it ALL, even royalties for a freaking hat. Really? Shouldn’t she be making bras for those tig ol bitties she has and getting profit off of that? Why hasn’t she jumped on that bandwagon?
“Queen of soul Aretha Franklin made a serious fashion statement with her gray hat during her performance at President Obama’s Inauguration. And now the legend would like to see royalties from the Detroit hat shop where she bought it – and that has been booming in sales ever since, according to the Detroit Free Press. Mr Song Millinery store owner Luke Song, didn’t respond to questions on whether Franklin would be compensated for the attention her appearance gave the store.” (source)
Here’s the thing, Aretha only picked out the hat, she didn’t design it! How dare she ask for royalties for something that someone else designed? That’s like me saying that I should get paid because I mention Nuvo and every other liquor every now and then on my blog, even though I had no part in designing the bottle, mixing and distilling the ingredients, etc.
Don’t you dare start quoting that “a diva is a female version of a hustler” because divas like Aretha, Mariah, Diana, etc. are nothing more than grown women (and some men) acting like spoiled brats wanting their way.

I understand that the lying share of royalties should go to the designer & I’m pretty sure the designer is seeing some money. However, in all reality had she NEVER wore the hat that same store would not be seeing that huge jump in sales. I think Aretha is simply trying to make a statement. I don’t think she really needs the money, but she wants all to know that you can’t just use her w/o justly compensating her. I understand your point Nicky, but I’m pretty sure that sales of Nuvo (which I don’t see the big deal about it) wouldn’t quadruple if you mentioned it in your blog. No disrespect. IJS
