D.L. Hughley’s CNN show CANCELLED! I guess I’ll drink to that.

I hear this nagging voice in my head telling me that we should support black shows, black actors, black comedians, black owned businesses, etc. But how do you support someone who is clearly not funny? D. L. Hughley is one of those people who can’t keep a show because guess what? He is not funny! How did he come from “Kings of Comedy” and end up getting gigs that keep getting cancelled? (No need to run a rap sheet, you can look it up on Wikipedia.)

I have watched him on the guest panel of “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO and he wasn’t telling as many cheesy jokes then. I saw someone who knew what was going on in the world and was able to debate with the best of them. I guess this is what CNN saw in D.L. Hughley.

Now, I’ve seen his show on CNN and I was ready to just change the channel because D.L. Hughley was trying way too hard with his jokes. I was already predicting that this would be his first and last season, but lo and behold, season two came. He had less jokes and was talking more about the current events and interviewing real people, other than satirizied characters (I saw “Ashy Larry” aka Donell Rawlings on one episode as a pimp, huh?). Apparently he was doing a lot more research. By then, I guess it was too little, too late. And as usual, CNN is on some bull:

“D.L. approached CNN about being permanently based in Los Angeles, where his family lives. To accommodate this, we agreed upon a new role where he will be a contributor for the network based in Los Angeles. We are eager to continue our relationship with D.L., who is a tremendous talent and a valued colleague.”

CNN told Journal-isms’ Richard Prince that the show would be on through the end of this month. And according to Journal-isms, industry blog, TV Newser reported that it would have become cost-prohibitive to produce the show in Los Angeles.

Last Saturday, the show really did break some news when it interviewed Republican National Party chairman Michael Steele who used the opportunity to tell the world that he was in charge of the GOP and not radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, whom he later apologized to.

As a one-hour, Saturday night news/comedy show, “D. L. Hughley Breaks The News” was averaging about 200,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo. (source)

Sadly, I feel this is the case of yet another black show being cancelled. And this also sounds like some corporate office bulls–t because they will do anything to cut costs and have someone come in once or twice a week to do contribute for a little chump change. I hope D.L. takes this time to step up his writing material and come back with a better gig.

DL Hughley has his funny moments, but his shows definitely aren’t laughable. His first show (DL Hughley Show) was horrible; I never watched that trash because it was so not funny.

Out of all the ‘Kings Of Comedy’, Bernie Mac had the funniest show, followed by Steve Harvey’s show.

I think DL Hughley was funny when he was younger, and he hasn’t changed his routine though the times have changed considerably. He does need to step his game up.
