Is this still going on? Dark skinned vs. light skinned
A while back, I posted a blog about Snoop Dogg’s comments regarding “ugly singers”. Now it seems like Angie Stone is saying the same thing; dark skinned entertainers aren’t getting enough exposure and/or respect and the light skinned people are.
“Well, you know it goes back to the very beginning. If you were light skinned you were in, if you were dark skinned you were out. It very well works that way in the industry. You see very [few] dark skinned people on top of the game. Most of the superstars are very fair or mullatto people. You can check your stats. It works that way in the film world too. I have lost almost every single opportunity to star in a film to Macy Gray or Jill Scott because they’re light and I’m dark. I’ve been told so many times that it’s a certain look that they’re looking for.” (source)
What are your thoughts on this? Are we back in the 80’s again? Are we back to that scene in “School Daze” where there were the “Jiggaboos” and the “Wannabes”?

I disagree.. Lauren Hill got plenty of luv from being on magazine covers to being played on the radio all the time (before she went crazy), Missy Elliot gets exposure. But it is easier if your light with very little talent. When your dark you have to have talent, be a producer like the two I mentioned and be attractive. Even though Missy is big, she has wonderful bone structure and takes amazing pics..

Good one Fresh & Fab. Angie makes another excellent point. When it comes to women it is kind of tough when you’re dark-skinned & in Angie’s case she is a plus size woman. That makes it even tougher. She can sing & perform every bit as well as Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, etc., but Hollywood & the music industry doesn’t think too fondly of them. Eddie Murphy had to go through terror to make in Hollywood while lesser talented light-skinned comedians were just handed opportunities. Angie Stone knows what she’s talking about, and she has definitely gained my respect.

Skin Color does matter; and it always will. But Angie need to go sat down somewhere cause there are plenty of dark-skinned sisters who are doing the damn thing in spite of. Being of a darker hue can be somewhat of a liability but self-confidence is King. Angie is talented but in this case she’s not as talented as Lauryn, Jill, Alicia Keys (she can’t play piano) or Beyonce’s wicked curves, dancing skills, and energy level.
There are plenty of dim-witted light skin chicks that have door open for them; but also get them shut down real quick because they are shallow pools. Beyonce is a pop queen; but chic can’t act. Period. Now how’s that for them apples…
